Summer is coming;
Think Density Altitude
Hot, high and humid weather conditions can change a routine takeoff or landing
into an accident in less time than it takes to tell about it.
Density altitude effects are not confined to mountain
areas. They also apply at elevations near sea level when temperatures go
above standard. (59 F or 15 C)
From the pilot’s point of view, an increase in
density altitude results in:
1. Increased takeoff distance.
2. Reduced rate of climb.
3. Increased true airspeed on approach and ldg (same IAS).
4. Increased landing roll distance.
To calculate Density Altitude refer to your Aircraft Pilot’s Operating
Handbook or ask your FSDO for the P-Pamphlet entitled “Density Altitude”

Don't forget to take care of the most important
part of the aircraft- -the pilot. Bring some water along on trips to avoid
dehydration.Summer brings great opportunities for a GA aircraft with trips
for vacation travel to just plain "fun flying."

Look
Out!
Avoid Midair Collisions
Studies of the midair collision problems form certain
definite warning patterns. It may be surprising to some that nearly all
midair collisions occur during daylight hours and in VFR conditions. Perhaps
not so surprising is that the majority happen within five miles of an airport,
in the areas of greatest traffic concentration, and usually on warm weekend
afternoons when more pilots are doing more flying.
Also surprising is the fact that the closing speed is
relatively slow, usually much slower than the airspeed of either aircraft
involved. This is because the majority of in-flight collisions are the result
of a faster aircraft overtaking and hitting a slower plane.
The cause of a midair collision is most often noted as:
"Failure of pilot to see the other aircraft". So remember to Look
Out!

Helicopter PilotsStay out from under the Bridge!
Helicopter pilots are cautioned to stay out from under
the Vincent Thomas Bridge.
New construction on the bridge requirescables that hang down to the water.
These cables move from time to time and can be difficult to see.

"Flight 2000"
Evaluating new Air Traffic Concepts.
Beginning in 1999, the FAA will conduct a two-year evaluation
of new air traffic management concepts and technologies in Hawaii and Alaska.
The Flight 2000 project is a revolutionary air traffic management concept
that will greatly increase users' flexibility to plan flight routes and
operate aircraft. Imagine a small box in the cockpit giving you Global Positioning
Satellites (GPS) for navigation, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast
(ADS-B) equipment for surveillance, and data link for communications of
voice and weather data.
This system will use the ADS-B to transmit GPS derived position information
directly to other ADS-B equipped aircraft and ATC via either satellite or
a ground based communication link. Situational awareness will be enhanced
because it will allow similarly equipped aircraft to view other traffic
on a cockpit screen and ATC will see the same picture as the aircraft.

PACE Program ??
What is it??
We are asking for owners to volunteer their aircraft for
a participation in the PACE program. The program is a "NON-ENFORCEMENT"
activity providing a courtesy evaluation for general aviation aircraft.
The aircraft are brought to a specific location and a team of FAA inspectors
will look the aircraft over and note items of maintenance that need to be
corrected and/or verified for maintaining the airwothiness of the aircraft.
We have had very good positive feedback on our program
activities so far. We also explain the reason for the findings to the owner(s)
so that the activity is also educational for all participants.
The findings are not recorded or tracked in the FAA enforcement
system. If an item is found to be unairworthy and the owner needs to fly
the aircraft to a location to get it repaired, a Special Flight Permit (Ferry
Permit) may be issued so the pilot/owner may return the aircraft to a specific
location for the repair activity to correct the finding.

x 266 for a scheduled appointment AT LEAST 30 days prior to the date of
activity. Log Books for aircraft, engine(s), Propeller(s) should be brought
to the FSDO ASAP for review and analysis. Try us!!, you might be surprised
and learn a little more about your aircraft and it's safe operation. |
