Finding a Better Way~Anatomy of a Training Accident: CFI Responsibilities and Liabilities.
Join a team of master instructors, Lyn Carlson & Don Werno, for an examination of the many responsibilities CFIs assume when assuring both the proper flight preparation and safety elements of student pilot flight training activities. Based on a specific accident from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) archives, this seminar traces the actual events through audio, video and printed materials. It's an eye opener for new and experienced instructors both. Bring your E-6B and cross country flight planning tools.

WINGS I had the pleasure of awarding a Phase XIV Wings to Mike Jones of Fullerton recently. Mike Jones has achieved these 14 Wings phases at the rate of one per year since 1985.
I asked him why. Mike told me that he owns a high performance airplane and found that he wanted the benefit of ongoing training to keep himself sharp and to provide a buffer for himself if something ever happened where he would need to demonstrate his serious commitment to safe flying. He has not needed that buffer and he has shown his commitment.

Congratulations Mike!

Spring is Here
Lots of pilots fly with an allergy or a cold. We do it because we have to, or because we want to. Many of us may take something to keep our sinuses and eustachian tubes at least partially cleared.
Taking cold or allergy medication is one of the greatest and most frequently overlooked hazards to safe flight. Virtually every medication that can effect the symptoms of a cold or allergy causes some degradation in skills critical to piloting. How much degradation, and which skills are affected, varies with the person and the drug.
Histamine is a substance released by your body to fight what it perceives as an invader. Antihistamines work to block the action of histamine and in doing so relieve the symptoms of colds or allergies. Antihistamines cause their own set of symptoms, however, some of which can have a significant effect on your ability to fly. The most well known effect is drowsiness.
Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) acts as a decongestant. It is not only a decongestant, however, but also the primary ingredient in many diet and "pick me up" pills. PPA is found in more than 75 over-the-counter medications.
A student and instructor in a Piper Tomahawk were observed to be flying level in clear conditions when the plane entered a spin and descended until striking the ground. The aircraft was destroyed and both pilots were killed. The NTSB inspection yielded no structural failure and the engine teardown revealed nothing out of line. The medical examiner's autopsy detected no cause for incapacitation. Toxicology test were negative for alcohol, carbon monoxide and all drugs except one: PPA in the instructor's urine.
Spring is a great time to fly. Fly it safely.

Question: My aircraft has a glide slope, a VOR, an ADF and a GPS. Since I can demonstrate two non-precision approaches without an NDB, (I never use the ADF since the GPS was installed), do I have to demonstrate an NDB approach on my instrument check ride?  Answer: Maybe yes, maybe no.
The Instrument Practical Test Standard that became effective October 1 of 1998 requires one precision approach and two non-precision approaches. The Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach satisfies the precision approach requirement.
There are seven different kinds of non-precision approaches. The aircraft used for the test must have properly installed and certified navigational equipment capable of performing at least two of the following non-precision approaches: VOR, NDB, LOC, SDA, SDF, RNAV and GPS.
If the aircraft has equipment capable of performing more than two different kinds of approaches, the examiner, not the applicant, chooses which two non-precision approaches are to be demonstrated.
Bottom Line: You and your instructor will want to prepare for all non-precision approaches your aircraft is equipped to handle and in this case, that includes an NDB approach
